Wooden Coins

Thin pieces of wood used as tokens are known from the nineteenth and twelfth centuries in many parts of China and Africa, and as small Notgeld from Austria and Germany during the First World War. Wooden nickels is the somewhat contradictory name given to tokens of a commemorative nature, widely popular in he USA since 1930.
